What is on the TCF Canada exam?
TCF Canada has four mandatory sections. Listening and reading are multiple choice and machine scored; writing and speaking are assessed by examiners. The test is offered in both computer-based and paper-based formats depending on the centre.
| Section | Duration | Content | Score scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening comprehension | 35 min | 39 questions | 0–699 |
| Reading comprehension | 60 min | 39 questions | 0–699 |
| Written expression | 60 min | 3 tasks | 0–20 |
| Oral expression | 12 min | 3 tasks | 0–20 |
Two scales, one threshold
The mixed scales trip people up. Listening and reading run to 699, writing and speaking to 20. They are not comparable as raw numbers — the only figure that matters for immigration is the NCLC level each one converts to.
What TCF Canada score do you need for NCLC 7?
NCLC 7 must be reached in all four skills simultaneously. One skill below the line pulls your usable result down to that level and costs you the French bonus entirely.
| Skill | NCLC 7 minimum | Full scale |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 458 | 0–699 |
| Reading | 453 | 0–699 |
| Writing | 10 | 0–20 |
| Speaking | 10 | 0–20 |
Note that listening and reading do not share a threshold even though they share a scale — listening needs 458 while reading needs 453. Writing and speaking use identical breakpoints on the 0–20 scale.
NCLC 7 corresponds to roughly a solid B2 in CEFR terms, which is the top of the VOCALE curriculum.
TCF Canada or TEF Canada — which should you take?
IRCC designates both and treats an NCLC 7 from either identically. Both certificates are valid for two years. Choose on format fit and test-centre availability, not on a belief that one is easier.
| TCF Canada | TEF Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Total duration | ~2 h 47 min | ~2 h 55 min |
| Listening | 35 min · 39 questions | 40 min · 40 questions |
| Reading | 60 min · 39 questions | 60 min · 40 questions |
| Writing | 3 shorter tasks · 0–20 | 2 longer tasks · 0–450 |
| Speaking | 12 min · 3 tasks · 0–20 | 15 min · 2 topics · 0–450 |
| Certificate validity | 2 years | 2 years |
| Accepted by IRCC | Yes | Yes |
- Prefer TCF Canada if three shorter writing tasks suit you better than two long ones, or if it is what your nearest centre offers sooner.
- Prefer TEF Canada if you write better at length and want the wider 0–450 scale, where partial gains are more visible between attempts.
The full TEF breakdown is on the TEF Canada guide.
How does TCF Canada affect your Express Entry score?
IRCC converts your TCF Canada results into NCLC levels and feeds those into your Comprehensive Ranking System score. French is worth up to 50 additional CRS points and opens the French-language proficiency category draws, which have been issuing invitations at far lower CRS cut-offs than the general rounds.
- 50 CRS points — NCLC 7+ in all four French skills, plus CLB 5+ in all four English skills.
- 25 CRS points — NCLC 7+ in all four French skills, with CLB 4 or lower in English, or no English test.
- Eligibility for the French-language proficiency category.
The points arithmetic and the category-draw route are covered in the French for Canadian immigration guide.
How do you prepare for TCF Canada?
- 1
Get placed before you plan
A free trial class establishes your real CEFR level. Booking a test date before you know your level is the most expensive mistake in TCF preparation.
- 2
Build to B2, then sharpen the exam
NCLC 7 is a language level. VOCALE runs A1 to B2 with TCF Canada preparation included in every class at no extra cost.
- 3
Practise the short-task writing format
Three tasks in 60 minutes rewards planning speed and structure, not long-form flourish. This is a trainable, mechanical skill.
- 4
Rehearse the 12-minute speaking block
Three tasks in twelve minutes leaves no recovery time. Repeated timed rehearsal with a tutor is what moves this section.
- 5
Watch your weakest skill, not your average
All four must clear NCLC 7 independently. Weight class time toward your lowest section.

Frequently asked questions
What TCF Canada score is NCLC 7?
Listening 458 or higher and reading 453 or higher on the 0 to 699 scale, plus writing 10 or higher and speaking 10 or higher on the 0 to 20 scale. All four skills must reach NCLC 7 at the same time.
How long is the TCF Canada exam?
About 2 hours 47 minutes in total: 35 minutes listening, 60 minutes reading, 60 minutes written expression and 12 minutes oral expression.
How long is a TCF Canada certificate valid?
Two years from the date the results are issued. IRCC requires your scores to be less than two years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
Is TCF Canada easier than TEF Canada?
Neither is officially easier, and IRCC treats an NCLC 7 from either test identically. TCF writing is three shorter tasks scored 0 to 20; TEF writing is two longer tasks scored 0 to 450. Most candidates choose on test-centre availability and which writing format suits them.
Is TCF Canada computer-based or on paper?
Both formats exist. Availability depends on the test centre, so confirm the delivery format when you book your session.
Can a complete beginner reach NCLC 7 on TCF Canada?
Yes, treating it as a full CEFR journey rather than a short exam course. NCLC 7 is roughly a solid B2. VOCALE students starting at A1 typically reach B2 in 10 to 12 months in Group Classes, or 6 to 8 months in Intensive 1-on-1.
Does VOCALE charge extra for TCF Canada preparation?
No. TCF Canada preparation is included in every VOCALE program at no additional cost, in both Group Classes at 200 CAD per month and Intensive 1-on-1 at 300 CAD per month.
