TEF Canada preparation: format, scores and the NCLC 7 targets
The TEF Canada is a four-section French proficiency test accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration. It takes about 2 hours 55 minutes, covers reading, listening, written expression and oral expression, and the certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Your raw score in each section converts to an NCLC level from 1 to 12, and NCLC 7 in all four skills is the line that unlocks French bonus points in Express Entry.

What is on the TEF Canada exam?
TEF Canada has four mandatory sections, all sat on the same day. Reading and listening are multiple choice; writing and speaking are assessed by examiners. Each section is scored on its own scale — the scales are not the same size, which is why a "good score" means something different in each one.
| Section | Duration | Content | Score scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading comprehension | 60 min | 40 multiple-choice questions | 0–300 |
| Listening comprehension | 40 min | 40 multiple-choice questions | 0–360 |
| Written expression | 60 min | 2 tasks — Task A (25 min, 80+ words), Task B (35 min, 200+ words) | 0–450 |
| Oral expression | 15 min | 2 topics, face to face with an assessor | 0–450 |
Format change in effect
Since 1 September 2025, micro-trottoir listening questions offer three answer options instead of four, and certain interview segments may be played twice. Everything else in the format is unchanged.
The listening audio is played once for most item types, and the reading section does not let you go back to earlier questions. Both of those constraints reward pacing practice far more than they reward vocabulary cramming.
What TEF Canada score do you need for NCLC 7?
NCLC 7 is the threshold that matters for Express Entry. You need it in all four skills at once — one section below the line disqualifies you from the French bonus, no matter how strong the other three are.
| Skill | NCLC 7 range | Full scale |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 207–232 | 0–300 |
| Listening | 249–279 | 0–360 |
| Writing | 310–348 | 0–450 |
| Speaking | 310–348 | 0–450 |
In CEFR terms NCLC 7 sits at roughly a solid B2. That is exactly the ceiling of the VOCALE curriculum, which runs A1 through B2 — so a complete beginner has a defined route to the score rather than an open-ended one.
Why does the TEF Canada score matter for immigration?
IRCC converts your TEF Canada results into NCLC levels and uses those to calculate your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for Express Entry. French proficiency is worth up to 50 additional CRS points, and it also makes you eligible for French-language category draws, which have been landing at dramatically lower CRS cut-offs than the general draws.
- 50 CRS points — NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills, plus CLB 5 or higher in all four English skills.
- 25 CRS points — NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills, with CLB 4 or lower in English, or no English test at all.
- Eligibility for French-language proficiency category draws, a separate stream from the general Express Entry pool.
Full detail on the points maths and the category draws is on the French for Canadian immigration guide.
TEF Canada or TCF Canada — which should you take?
Both are designated by IRCC, both are valid for two years, and IRCC treats an NCLC 7 from either test identically. The practical differences are in format and scoring.
| TEF Canada | TCF Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Total duration | ~2 h 55 min | ~2 h 47 min |
| Reading | 60 min · 40 questions | 60 min · 39 questions |
| Listening | 40 min · 40 questions | 35 min · 39 questions |
| Writing | 60 min · 2 tasks · 0–450 | 60 min · 3 tasks · 0–20 |
| Speaking | 15 min · 2 topics · 0–450 | 12 min · 3 tasks · 0–20 |
| Accepted by IRCC | Yes | Yes |
Pick on test-centre availability and on which writing format suits you: TEF asks for two longer pieces, TCF asks for three shorter ones. See the TCF Canada guide for that exam in full.
How do you prepare for TEF Canada?
- 1
Establish your real CEFR level first
Book a free trial class and get placed. Preparing for a B2-level exam from an unmeasured starting point is the most common reason candidates re-sit.
- 2
Build the level, then the exam technique
NCLC 7 is a language target, not a test trick. VOCALE runs the CEFR ladder from A1 to B2 with exam preparation folded into every class at no extra cost.
- 3
Drill the four sections under real timing
Audio plays once and reading has no backtracking, so pacing is a skill in itself. Timed practice is where most of the score gain sits in the final weeks.
- 4
Protect your weakest skill
Because NCLC 7 must be hit in all four skills simultaneously, your lowest section determines your outcome. Class time should be weighted toward it, not toward the skill you enjoy most.
- 5
Sit the test with valid dates in mind
Results must be under two years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a TEF Canada certificate valid?
Two years from the date the results are issued. IRCC requires your scores to be less than two years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.
What TEF Canada score is NCLC 7?
Reading 207 to 232 out of 300, listening 249 to 279 out of 360, writing 310 to 348 out of 450, and speaking 310 to 348 out of 450. You must reach NCLC 7 in all four skills at the same time to qualify for the French bonus in Express Entry.
How long is the TEF Canada exam?
About 2 hours 55 minutes in total, sat on a single day: 60 minutes reading, 40 minutes listening, 60 minutes written expression, and 15 minutes oral expression.
Is TEF Canada harder than TCF Canada?
Neither is officially harder, and IRCC treats an NCLC 7 from either test identically. The formats differ: TEF written expression is two longer tasks on a 0 to 450 scale, while TCF writing is three shorter tasks on a 0 to 20 scale. Candidates usually choose on test-centre availability and which writing format suits them.
Can a complete beginner reach NCLC 7 on TEF Canada?
Yes, but it is a full CEFR journey, not a short exam course. NCLC 7 corresponds to roughly a solid B2. VOCALE students starting at A1 typically reach B2 in 10 to 12 months in Group Classes, or 6 to 8 months in the Intensive 1-on-1 program.
Does VOCALE charge extra for TEF preparation?
No. TEF Canada preparation is included in every VOCALE program at no additional cost, in both Group Classes at 200 CAD per month and Intensive 1-on-1 at 300 CAD per month.
What changed in the TEF Canada format in 2025?
From 1 September 2025, micro-trottoir listening questions offer three answer options instead of four, and certain interview segments may be played twice. The four sections, their durations and their score scales are otherwise unchanged.
